Work Related Road Safety
Department for Transport and the Health & Safety Executive figures show that ‘ up to a third of all road traffic accidents involve somebody who is at work at the time.' This equates to around 20 deaths and 250 serious injuries per week. Companies who fail to manage this area of Health & Safety are not only putting themselves at serious risk of litigation, they are also loosing money with increased leasing and insurance cost.
Health and Safety law requires employers to ensure, so far is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all employees and others who may be put at risk from their work activities. Risk assessments of all work related driving activities must be carried out to assess the relative risks for those involved. This must look at the vehicle, the driver and the journey. A proactive Safe Driving Policy should be developed to address such matters as vehicle suitability, journey planning, driver fatigue, mobile phone use, defensive driving strategies etc.
Insurers assume no risk management is in place and apply premiums that reflect their expectation for the worst possible performance. Companies will have to fight to reduce premiums and will need strong evidence of managing the risks to support this. A method of assessing a driver's competence and behaviour characteristics at the time of recruitment and annual reviews is necessary to reduce the incidents of occupational driving accidents. The assessment tool must indicate a driver's need for help and further training to be a competent safe driver.
ArriveSafe
The HQ computer based system provides a consistent method of assessment and delivery of information, is most cost effective and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. The driver's performance is recorded to a database for later retrieval. Further action can then be discussed with the driver as required.
